Joanne Weiner and Private Tutoring ServicesWhile the proliferation of home-schooled children in the United States over the past decade doesn’t signal the collapse of traditional secondary education, it does illustrate a growing interest by parents to pursue options beyond brick-and-mortar public and private schools.

To that end, Joanne Weiner says welcome to her world.

In January, the founder of Private Tutoring Services officially opened the doors to Royal Palm Academy in Boca, a blended learning program unlike any in South Florida. Even the backdrop, amid the restaurants and retail at Royal Palm Plaza, is different. But the setting, according to Weiner, is hardly the only element that will distinguish, what she believes, is the next chapter in the evolution of creative education.

The Sun Sentinel

February 16, 2000

Private Tutoring Services will begin facilitating "Teens Tutoring Teens" at Boca Middle School on Tuesday. The program is sponsored by a grant from the Youth Services Council of Boca Raton's Promise-The Alliance for Youth. Under this community service event, trained high school students will offer an academic helping hand to their fellow teens.

The students receiving assistance are members of Choices, an Outward Bound program sponsored by the Boca Raton Police Department. Through their participation, they will fulfill membership requirements and have their educational experience enhanced. The tutors who volunteer will enjoy peer interaction and the satisfaction that comes with social service; they also will complete community service hours required for graduation.

The goal of Private Tutoring Services is to help people realize their potential. For more information about Teens Tutoring Teens, call 561-338-3811.

Individualized attention emphasizes 'learning to learn'

Palm Beach Post: Jobs

By Barbara Dole

Classroom over-crowding. Discipline problems. Language barriers. Peer pressure. Varying levels of student comprehension. All of these conditions can affect the speed at which course work is taught and, in the end, impact how much and how well students learn in the traditional classroom setting.

So, you want to be a private tutor?

Palm Beach Post: Interview

By Barbara Dole

Subject: Melissa Gustin
Title: Assistant Director
Where: Private Tutoring Services
Boca Raton, FL

Q: What does your job entail?

A: I am a private tutor for students of all ages. I work in cooperation with other schools and with certain distance-learning programs.

Q: How did you get started?

A: After receiving my bachelor's degree in journalism from New York University, I moved to Spain to teach English as a second language to adults. When I returned to the United States, I met Joanne Weiner, the director of Private Tutoring Services, and began tutoring. I enjoyed tutoring students individually much more than in a classroom setting. Every student has an independent way of learning and private tutoring can cater directly to his/her needs, creating a confidence in school that is necessary for true academic success.
